What are cookies?

Cookies are text files containing small amounts of information which are downloaded to your computer or mobile device when you visit a website. Cookies are then sent back to the originating website on each subsequent visit, or to another website that recognises that cookie. Cookies are useful because they allow a website to recognise a user’s device. You can find more information about cookies at: www.allaboutcookies.org.

Cookies do lots of different jobs, like letting you navigate between pages efficiently, remembering your preferences, and generally improving the user experience. They can also help to ensure that adverts you see online are more relevant to you and your interests.

Why do we use cookies?

  • to make our sites easier for you to use
  • to distinguish you from other users of our sites. This helps us to provide you with a good experience when you browse our sites and also allows us to improve our sites
  • to help stop our online forms from being used to send spam-email
  • to monitor usage so we can spot trends and make improvements
  • to evaluate our sites’ advertising and promotional effectiveness (we own the anonymous data collected and don’t share it with anyone)
  • to identify individuals in the following circumstances (and personal information is stored by us as a result):
    • when they submit an enquiry via the contact form on our website
    • if they visit our site via a hyperlink inserted in an email or newsletter sent by us (directly or via the Force24 platform detailed below) to a named or generic email address

This cookie is typically written into the browser upon the first visit to your site from that web browser. If the cookie has been deleted by the browser operator, and the browser subsequently visits your site, a new __utma cookie is written with a different unique ID. This cookie is used to determine unique visitors to the site and it is updated with each page view. Additionally, this cookie is provided with a unique ID that Google Analytics uses to ensure both the validity and accessibility of the cookie as an extra security measure.

_utmbThis cookie is used to establish and continue a user session with the site. When a user views a page on a site, the Google Analytics code attempts to update this cookie. If it does not find the cookie, a new one is written and a new session is established. Each time a user visits a different page on your site, this cookie is updated to expire in 30 minutes, thus continuing a single session for as long as user activity continues within 30-minute intervals. This cookie expires when a user pauses on a page on your site for longer than 30 minutes. You can modify the default length of a user session.

_utmcThis cookie operates in conjunction with the __utmb cookie to determine whether or not to establish a new session for the user. For backwards compatibility purposes with sites still using the urchin.js tracking code, this cookie will continue to be written and will expire when the user exits the browser. However, if you are debugging your site tracking and you use the ga.js tracking code, you should not interpret the existence of this cookie in relation to a new or expired session.

How can you control the cookies we use?

You can block cookies by activating the setting on your browser that allows you to refuse the setting of all or some cookies or by disabling them when asked. However, if you use your browser settings to block all cookies (including essential cookies) you may not be able to access all or parts of our site.

If you “disable” cookies the interactive functions of the website will not operate. For example, data-submission via forms, features requiring login and many other features of the sites cannot work fully without using cookies.

If you ignore the cookies notification, the sites will continue to set cookies as necessary. This approach of “implied opt-in” is specifically discussed and approved in the guidance notes issued by the Information Commissioner’s Office (the organisation charged with enforcement of the legislation governing the use of cookies).

Where we do provide any interactive service, we will provide clear information to you about the kind of service offered, if it is moderated and what form of moderation is used (including whether it is human or technical).

We will do our best to assess any possible risks for users (and in particular, for children) from third parties when they use any interactive service provided on our site, and we will decide in each case whether it is appropriate to use moderation of the relevant service (including what kind of moderation to use) in the light of those risks.
