Last week, we said a fond farewell to Harrison Hardy-Smith, as he completed his internship here at The Miles Consultancy. Harrison joined us last year after completing two years towards his Business Management undergraduate degree at the University of Nottingham.

As Harrison heads back to university, we’d like to take the opportunity to thank him for his exceptional dedication to the business through his placement and everybody here at TMC would like to wish him the very best for completing his final year. We hope to see you back here soon!

Below are some words of reflection from Harrison himself.

“As I wrap up my 14 month placement at The Miles Consultancy, I find myself reflecting on a year that has been incredible. Coming into this role after two years of university study, I was eager to apply what I had learned at university and gain valuable work experience with TMC.”

What I’ve learned

Coming into my placement with TMC, I wasn’t 100% sure on what to expect. Throughout my time with the business, I’ve worked with most employees in some capacity and therefore have learnt how important it is to communicate effectively in the work environment, as well as getting to know people on a more personal level. Breaking down these walls with colleagues is when you can start to become an effective team.

With stepping into a ‘proper’ 9-5 job, I’ve had to learn to manage my time much more effectively. You don’t have any time to procrastinate in a fast-paced environment like TMC. I’d have to say my research skills have improved leaps and bounds, as I’ve learned to be thorough but efficient. The fleet industry was completely new to me and therefore a lot of learning was required until I felt like I had my head above water, so to speak.

My favourite moments & experiences

I’ve had a lot of memorable moments while working at TMC. Of course, my first day is up there. I was nervous but as soon as I met Gemma (Commercial Director), I started to feel settled. I remember her taking me under her wing and helping me feel at ease.

I enjoyed the events that the Sports and Social team organised. There were quite a few during my time at TMC, but I particularly liked the hike and sports day.

I loved the Christmas party. I was told that this was one of TMC’s big events so there was quite a lot of hype around it. However, it certainly lived up to it. We went to Manchester Central, everyone dressed up fancy and ready to have a good time. It was thoroughly enjoyed by all – cheers to everyone who helped organise and make it such a special event.

Work-wise, my favourite moment would have to be bringing on my first customer. I worked closely with Gemma on this as she guided me through the sale, negotiations and implementation process. The feeling of closing the deal and getting the customer live was brilliant. Following on from Gemma’s help, I’ve had the confidence to bring on even more customers since. It helps when the service is valued so highly by your customers!

A special thanks

I must say a massive thank you to the CEO & Founder of The Miles Consultancy, Paul Jackson, for the opportunity. From the moment I met Paul in my first interview, I could feel his passion for the business. We sat down for two hours and in his explanation of his vision for TMC and the future of mobility, I knew I wanted to do my part to help TMC reach these heights. I’ve spoken regularly with Paul and he’s always made time to have conversations with me and ask me how I was getting on and I appreciated that. Thank you, PJ!

The other person that I must thank is our Commercial Director, Gemma Icke. Gemma’s made me feel welcome from the moment I first met her smiley face. Throughout my entire 14 months with TMC, she’s pushed me and ensured I’ve got the most out of my time that I could. Gemma’s played a huge part in making my time with TMC so special. Thanks, Gem!

A year in review: My placement highlights at TMC

In my final week at TMC, I sat down to discuss my experiences as a business management intern here at TMC. Watch my placement highlights video below!

The next chapter

Looking ahead, I’ve got one year left at the University of Nottingham, to complete my degree in BSc Business Management. I’m looking forward to getting this all wrapped up now and hopefully coming back to TMC.
