What are cookies?

Cookies are text files containing small amounts of information which are downloaded to your computer or mobile device when you visit a website. Cookies are then sent back to the originating website on each subsequent visit, or to another website that recognises that cookie. Cookies are useful because they allow a website to recognise a user’s device. You can find more information about cookies at: www.allaboutcookies.org.

Cookies do lots of different jobs, like letting you navigate between pages efficiently, remembering your preferences, and generally improving the user experience. They can also help to ensure that adverts you see online are more relevant to you and your interests.

Why do we use cookies?

  • to make our sites easier for you to use
  • to distinguish you from other users of our sites. This helps us to provide you with a good experience when you browse our sites and also allows us to improve our sites
  • to help stop our online forms from being used to send spam-email
  • to monitor usage so we can spot trends and make improvements
  • to evaluate our sites’ advertising and promotional effectiveness (we own the anonymous data collected and don’t share it with anyone)
  • to identify individuals in the following circumstances (and personal information is stored by us as a result):
    • when they submit an enquiry via the contact form on our website
    • if they visit our site via a hyperlink inserted in an email or newsletter sent by us (directly or via the Force24 platform detailed below) to a named or generic email address

Google Analytics

We use Google Analytics, a popular web analytics service provided by Google, Inc. Google Analytics uses cookies to help us to analyse how users use the site. It counts the number of visitors and tells us things about their behaviour overall – such as the typical length of stay on the site or the average number of pages a user views.

_utma

This cookie is typically written into the browser upon the first visit to your site from that web browser. If the cookie has been deleted by the browser operator, and the browser subsequently visits your site, a new __utma cookie is written with a different unique ID. This cookie is used to determine unique visitors to the site and it is updated with each page view. Additionally, this cookie is provided with a unique ID that Google Analytics uses to ensure both the validity and accessibility of the cookie as an extra security measure.

_utmb This cookie is used to establish and continue a user session with the site. When a user views a page on a site, the Google Analytics code attempts to update this cookie. If it does not find the cookie, a new one is written and a new session is established. Each time a user visits a different page on your site, this cookie is updated to expire in 30 minutes, thus continuing a single session for as long as user activity continues within 30-minute intervals. This cookie expires when a user pauses on a page on your site for longer than 30 minutes. You can modify the default length of a user session.

30 minutes

_utmc This cookie operates in conjunction with the __utmb cookie to determine whether or not to establish a new session for the user. For backwards compatibility purposes with sites still using the urchin.js tracking code, this cookie will continue to be written and will expire when the user exits the browser. However, if you are debugging your site tracking and you use the ga.js tracking code, you should not interpret the existence of this cookie in relation to a new or expired session.

_utmz This cookie stores the type of referral used by the visitor to reach the site, whether via a direct method, a referring link, a website search, or a campaign such as an ad or an email link. It is used to calculate search engine traffic, ad campaigns and page navigation within the site. The cookie is updated with each page view to the site.

_ga Used to distinguish users. 2 years
_gid Used to distinguish users. 24 hours
_gat Used to throttle request rate. If Google Analytics is deployed via Google Tag Manager, this cookie will be named _dc_gtm_<property- id>.

AMP_TOKEN Contains a token that can be used to retrieve a Client ID from AMP Client ID service. Other possible values indicate opt-out, inflight request or an error retrieving a Client ID from AMP Client ID service. 30 seconds to 1 year
_gac_<property-id> Contains campaign related information for the user. If you have linked your Google Analytics and Google Ads accounts, Google Ads website conversion tags will read this cookie unless you opt-out. 90 days

Force24

We use Force24’s marketing automation platform to send marketing emails to prospects. The platform uses cookies to enable us and Force24 to gain a better understanding of your viewing activities and areas of interest. Some cookies are used to make your access experience easier, whilst other cookies manage certain functionality and technical aspects.

If you click on a link to The Miles Consultancy Limited site from an email that we send you it is likely that activity will be tracked by Force24 and we may follow up with you. Filling out an enquiry form will cause the tracking code to be activated as well. Refusing cookies on our website will not stop these cookies from tracking your computer.

Cookie Name Cookie Purpose Cookie duration
f24_autoId This is a temporary identifier on a local machine or phone browser that helps us track anonymous information to be later married up with f24_personid. f24_personId This is an ID generated per individual contact in the Force24 system to be able to track behaviour and form submissions into the Force24 system from outside sources per user. This is used for personalisation and ability to segment decisions for further communications. This cookie is held for a 10-year duration. In reality users upgrade their browsers (which clears their cookies) within this time.

How can you control the cookies we use?

You can block cookies by activating the setting on your browser that allows you to refuse the setting of all or some cookies or by disabling them when asked. However, if you use your browser settings to block all cookies (including essential cookies) you may not be able to access all or parts of our site.

If you “disable” cookies the interactive functions of the website will not operate. For example, data-submission via forms, features requiring login and many other features of the sites cannot work fully without using cookies.

If you ignore the cookies notification, the sites will continue to set cookies as necessary. This approach of “implied opt-in” is specifically discussed and approved in the guidance notes issued by the Information Commissioner’s Office (the organisation charged with enforcement of the legislation governing the use of cookies).
